How to Check and Replace Transfer Case Fluid


  Replace transfer case fluid on a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive can solve many problems. Transfer case abnormal sound and operation can be caused by a lack of oil, and changing old fluids contaminated fluid.

Procedure to Check and Replace Transfer Case Fluid in your vehicle.

1. Secure the vehicle on a level surface.

2. Locate the oil fill plug on the transfer case.

3. Remove the top oil fill plug.

4. Using a flashlight, check for oil at the fill plug hole. When full, the oil should be just below the top hole.

5. With the top oil fill plug still out, remove the bottom oil drain plug to drain the oil into an oil drain pan.

6. Inspect transfer case oil for metal flakes when in the oil drain pan.

7. Thread the oil drain plug back into the transfer case (lower plug hole) and torque to manufacturer’s specifications.

8. Fill the transfer case with the manufacturer’s recommended oil until it begins to flow from the fill plug hole.

9. Thread the oil fill plug back into the transfer case.

10. Torque the oil fill plug to 30 ft. lbs.

11. Check for transfer case leaks.
